Sometimes we fall into a rut thinking vacations are only for summertime. Many of our more enjoyable getaways were during the fall and winter months – and I am not talking about Miami Beach.

Take a look at Gatlinburg TN. This busy recreation area is nestled at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains only ten minutes from Pigeon Forge and Dollywood. Gatlinburg is less then a day’s drive for over 60 percent of the US population. Fall and winter bring a new dress to this small town. The area puts on a four month long celebration called “Winterfest‿ and the ski lodge bustles with skiers and skaters. The town takes on a slower more restful pace and the traffic abates.

Bargains and specials abound in lodging and dining. This town specializes in chalet rentals. For about the same price as a hotel room you can get a modern mountain chalet with amenities like hot tubs, whirlpools, wood burning fireplaces, VHS and DVD players, full kitchen and more. Two couples splitting the fare will find much more for much less then a motel for overnight lodging. Most of the chalets are nestled on and around Harrison Mountain which also hosts the ski lodge.
